Volunteer Opportunities

Research Call for Women with Fibromyalgia. There will be a study to determine the effects on fibromyalgia symptoms and immune function in women. Findings may aid future studies with fibromyalgia. Women, aged 18 or older, who are not on steroid treatments, not pregnant, and do not have immune system problems are eligible. The study invloves completing questionnaires and having blood drawn. Community Idea Stations are starting the Fall 2008 WCVE PBS Membership Drive on Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 14. They need to fill phone operator positions during their membership campaign to take calls from viewers who would like to become members or to renew memberships. Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield is proud to presentAnthemLIVE! – The Ticket to Fight Cancer! A portion of the proceeds benefit Massey Cancer Center. Friday, September 12, 2008 at the VCU Siegel Center. This year’s event features the top-ranked American men’s tennis talents James Blake, Andy Roddick and the Bryan Brothers. James Blake is personally committed to doing his part to defeat cancer, having lost his father to the disease in 2004. Volunteers receive a boxed lunch, t-shirt, parking and ticket ($15). GFWC Ashcake Woman's Club is hosting the 5th Annual Ashland Harvest Run 10K run/5K walk-run. Signature Chefs Auction for March of Dimes, Charlottesville, needs volunteers. This special event has silent and live auctions, $100 plate meals, and more, all proceeds going to the March of Dimes mission to prevent prematurity, birth defects, and infant mortality in all babies through education, research, and advocacy. Volunteers are needed to help on the committee for this event, which takes place on Sunday, December 7, 2008 from 5pm-9pm at the Doubletree Hotel. The committee meets once a month in the summer and then twice a month in the fall. Your American Cancer Society is seeking cancer survivors - male and female, young and old - to participate in our 2008 Cure by Design Fashion Show. Survivors who have completed their treatments and survivors who are still in the treatment process are all welcome. Your participation signals a message of hope and aids in our important mission to raise cancer awareness. The event celebrates survivorship and hope for a cure by focusing on the roles that research, prevention, and early detection of cancer play in everyone's life. MentorMatch Richmond is training new mentors! Have you wanted to help a local distressed girl but didn't know how? MentorMatch Richmond brings adult female mentors together with young women from the foster care and juvenile justice system for traditional one-on-one mentoring in the Richmond Metropolitan Area. During their year of mentoring they may do many activities from skating in the park, doing homework, attending a Richmond Kickers game or completing a job application. As long as it's together! Senior Connections is recruiting for Long-Term Care Ombudsman Volunteers. The Capital Area Agency on Aging needs people to serve as advocates for residents' rights in nursing homes and assisted living facilities in the Central Virginia area. Volunteer ombudsmen make regular friendly visits to facilities and advocate for residents and help facilities resolve and handle minor issues.
